672-4 John (4th son of William and Burgess Crowell Higgins) was



called "Gentleman John". His nickname was given to him because

he rode up to someone's door and knocked on it without

dismounting. He was also known as "Cobbler John" as he was a

shoemaker. He md. Ruth Farnell. She was md. to Mr. Nelson and

was a widow with one small daughter, when she md. Gentleman

John. Her father, George Farnell, was on the frigate, La Tribune

"when it was wrecked off Halifax Harbour in 1797. The site of

the wreck has since been called, Tribune Shoal." At that time

the name was spelled "Pharnell" but over the years has been

changed to Farnell. Mrs. W.S. Collins, Halifax, N.S. and Mrs.

Lewis Fulton are grand daughters. Mrs. Cameron of Moose River

was a daughter. They had 3 sons and 3 daus.

(Owen) Edward Hogan


Ann Bryson, sister of Adam, James, William and Robert

Bryson is said to have come to N.S. after her brother sent for

her - according to Mrs. Frank Auser of California. It is thought

she was md. in Ireland to Owen Hogan. The Hogans came from

Ballintoy, County Cork, Ireland. They settled in Glenmore on the

place not too far from the brook which was called Hogan’s Brook,

after Mr. Hogan.

The following is taken from notes of Mrs. Isaac Dillman,

a grand-daughter of Ann Bryson. In her notes she states her

grandfather was "Edward Hogan" - but according to notes in the

Archives in Halifax, N.S. in the old Glenmore school records the

name Owen Hogan is given as the father of Thomas, age 6 in 1840

and of William age 9 in 1840.

Edward McCurdy, who always visited John Killen when he came to

the Musquodoboit Valley to preach. John’s sister, Rose Ann

Killen md. John Hoare of East Mountain, Col. Co. N.S. T he

history of other members of Edward Killen’s family not known.

Henry Hollingsworth
Henry Hollingsworth of Middle Musquodoboit was granted 500 acres

in Musquodoboit, South, Dec. 22, 1814.

Henry built a house on what was later known as “The Orchard

Farm”, where he and his wife spent the remainder of their lives.

In 1967 “The Orchard Farm” was owned by Vernon Scott, who had

built a home there, owned by Robert Standing 1980.

It is thought Henry died about 1832, according to old Deeds

(Elizabeth, in a Deed dated 1840, is referred to as “deceased”).

It is thought Henry and his wife were buried in the Pioneer

Cemetery, although no record is available.
