Layton) md. Letitia Gladwin.

Layton) studied music

Henry Leck

Henry Leck was born in Morebattle, Scotland, 1784. Mrs. R.H.

Leck of Mission, B.C. has been engaged in exhaustive research on

the Leck family and provides the following information:

The Scots Ancestry Research Society, Edinburgh, Scotland, states

that according to the parochial records of Morebattle, Henry Leck

and Mary Kirkwood were married there, November 12, 1812. The

births of their first two children, William, Jan. 5, 1814 and

John, July 31, 1815, are also recorded there.

In “Place Names and Places of Nova Scotia”, page 96, published by

the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, it is stated that “A land

grant was made to Samuel Noble, Henry Leck and Thomas Ainslie on

Aug. 21, 1829. These three moved to North Salem shortly after

they arrived in Halifax in May, 1817”.

It is believed that from North Salem, the Leck family came to

Coldstream and then to Musquodoboit, where they settled in what

is
PAGE 441

Now Chaswood.
The local version of the Leck history shows

Henry arriving in Halifax during the summer of 1812.

He and his wife Mary are said to have been passengers

on the same ship as the Bells, Ervins and Hendersons,

but the ship, American owned, was captured by the

British and brought into Halifax, as War had been

declared. These families came eventually to

Musquodoboit although their original destination had

been Carolina.

Henry Leck died in Sept. 29, 1866 and is buried in

Gay’s River Cemetery.
