You will also be skipping all the steps relating to the Bit3 card from the instructions below. Do not do any instructions that have an asterisk at the start of them.

Installing the Bit3, RocketPort, & SMC EtherPower cards in the PC:

    1. Locate the PC chassis, both Bit3 cards, RocketPort card, and the SMC EtherPower card.

    2. Write down the serial number of the PC system unit on a sheet of paper.

    3. Open the PC chassis by removing three screws on the back of the cabinet.

    4. If there is a Creative Labs sound card present inside the computer, it must be removed. First, make sure that you are properly grounded.

    5. To remove the sound card, first disconnect the small gray wire that connects the sound card to the CD-ROM. This wire also needs to be removed from the chassis.

    6. Next, unscrew the screw that holds the sound card in place and remove the sound card. Place the sound card and the small gray wire inside an empty static bag and set aside.

    7. Remove two dummy PC card brackets, one in between the two remaining cards, and one on the right (looking from the rear) of the remaining cards. These may be discarded.

    8. *Make sure you are properly grounded again, and then remove the Bit3 PCI card from the protective wrapper.

    9. *Install the Bit3 PCI card in the PCI slot immediately to the right (looking from the rear of the PC) of the video card already in the PC. Screw it in using one of the ¼” 6-32 screws.

    10. Install the SMC EtherPower card in the PCI slot immediately to the right (looking from the rear of the PC) of the 3Com network card already in the PC. Screw it in using another ¼” 6-32 screw.

    11. Make sure you are properly grounded, and then remove the RocketPort card from the protective wrapper.

    12. Install the RocketPort card in the PCI slot immediately to the right (looking from the rear of the PC) of the SMC network card you just installed. Screw it in using another ¼” 6-32 screw.

    13. Looking at the back of the PC, the order of the cards from left to right, is Video (already installed), *Bit3, 3Com network (already installed), SMC EtherPower network, & Rocket Port.

    14. Note the serial numbers of the cards you installed on the same sheet you used to write the serial number of the computer system unit. Also write them on the cover of the box the PC came in.

    15. Replace the cover on the PC, and screw it back on using the three screws previously removed.

    16. *Make sure you are properly grounded then remove the Bit3 VME card from the protective wrapper.

    17. *Using the Bit3 VME board jumper-setting chart, verify the correct jumper settings. You will have to remove one jumper put it in another location, then add four other jumpers. Make sure the jumpers match the chart.

    18. Put the Bit3 VME board back into the protective wrapper and put aside until ready to install it in the VME chassis.

This completes the installation of the cards in the PC.

    Windows NT 4.0 Setup:

    1. Attach the keyboard to the PC.

    2. Attach the mouse to the PC.

    3. Connect the monitor cable to the PC.

    4. Attach a power cord to the back of the PC cabinet and plug it into a 120 VAC outlet.

    5. Attach a power cord to the back of the monitor and plug it into a 120 VAC outlet.

    6. Connect one end of the RJ45 network cable to one of the 3COM network cards in back of the PC and plug the other end into a working network port.

    7. Turn on the monitor.

    8. Unless otherwise noted, for the remainder of these instructions, when asked to click on something with the mouse, use the LEFT mouse button.

    9. Most references to windows on the screen will note the window title. This is generally shown in blue on the top of the particular window. There will be times when several windows will be displayed, but always look for the highlighted one, which will have a blue title bar at the top of the window. During the setup you will notice that many consecutive windows have the same title. In this case, there is generally an obvious title in the window itself. That will be used in those cases.

    10. When the double quote symbol (“) is used in the remainder of these instructions, it is only used to differentiate things. When asked to type something, it will be enclosed in double quotes. DO NOT TYPE the double quote symbol (“); only type the information that is enclosed in the double quotes.

    11. Since we currently do not support anything beyond Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0, we must delete the existing copy of Windows NT 4.0 & reinstall it. To do this, when the computer first turns on, on the first screen that comes on during the booting that has a message saying “Press Del to enter setup” at the bottom of the screen. This message only appears for a second or so, so you must be very quick. Turn the computer on (there is a rocker switch on the back of the cabinet, turn it on, then press the power button on the front of the PC). Start pressing the “Delete” key while the screen is still black.

    12. It is very important to follow the following instructions exactly. Changing any of the other parameters besides the one in this procedure may negatively affect the computer’s performance. You need to change the system settings so the computer will turn back on correctly if the power is lost. To do this, when the “AMIBIOS SIMPLE Setup Utilityscreen comes up, press the “down arrow ()” one time to highlight the “BIOS FEATURES SETUP” menu option, then press the “Enter” key. Press the “Page Down” key 3 times to change the “1st Boot Device” to “CDROM”. Then press the “down arrow ()” key 2 times to highlight the “3rd Boot Device” option. Press the “Page Down” key 8 times to change this option to “Floppy”.

    13. Press the “Esc” key to return to the main “AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY” menu. Then press the “down arrow ()” key 2 times to highlight the “POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP” menu option and press the “Enter” key. Press the “down arrow ()” 17 times to highlight the “AC Back Function” option, then press the “Page Down” key 2 times to select “Power On”. Make sure the option immediately above this (“Soft-off by Power Button”) is set to “Instant Off”. If it is not, change it to that option.

    14. Press the “Esc” key one time to return to the “AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY” main menu.

    15. Press the “down arrow ()” key 4 times to highlight the “INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS” menu option and press the “Enter” key. Press the “down arrow ()” key 3 times to highlight the “OnBoard Serial Port 2” menu option. Press the “Page Down” key 5 times to select the “Auto” option.

    16. Press the “Esc” key one time to return to the “AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY” main menu.

    17. Place the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

    18. You now need to make sure the entire disk is recognized by the system. Press the “down arrow ()” key 3 times to get to the “IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION” menu item, then press the “Enter” key. This process will proceed automatically and fairly quickly.

    19. Press the “Esc” key to return to the “AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY” main menu.

    20. Exit out of the CMOS Setup Utility by either Pressing the F10 key or highlighting the “Save & Exit Setup” menu item and pressing the “Enter” key. Then type “Y” and press “Enter” again to exit setup. The computer will now reboot.

    21. Windows NT Setup will now load some files. This may take a few minutes. When the “Welcome to Setup” screen comes up, press “Enter”. Press “Enter” again.

    22. Press the “Enter” key one more time when the screen talking about the disk size comes up.

    23. On the License Agreement, press the “Page Down” key 7 times until you reach the bottom of the agreement. Then, press the “F8” key.

    24. On the next screen, press the “N” key.

    25. Again, press the “Enter” key on the next screen.

    26. The next screen shows the two partitions currently set up on the disk drive. One of those partitions is set to “FAT”, and the other is set to “NTFS”. Both partitions need to be “NTFS”, so you must delete the FAT partition and recreate it as an “NTFS” partition. To do this press the arrow key until the “C: FAT” partition is highlighted. Then press the “D” key to delete this partition. Press the “Enter” key on the next screen to continue with the partition delete operation. Press the “L” key to finalize the partition delete operation.

    27. You now are back at the disk partition screen. So there is no wasted space, you need to delete the other existing partition too. Press the arrow keys until the “C: NTFS” partition is highlighted, and then press the “D” key. Press the “Enter” key to continue with the partition delete operation. Press the “L” key to finalize the partition delete operation.

    28. You now are returned to the disk partition screen. Press the “C” key to create a new partition on the disk drive. Type “2032” in the size field and press the “Enter” key.

    29. You are now back at the disk partition screen again. You need to set up the rest of the space too, so move the arrow keys to highlight the “Unpartitioned space” line, then press the “C” key to create a new partition on that space. Press the “Enter” key to accept the maximum value for the remaining partition (take the maximum, whatever it is).

    30. Again, you are now back at the disk partition screen. Press the “Enter” key to continue with the Windows NT 4.0 installation.

    31. Using the arrow keys, move the highlight to the “Format the partition using the NTFS file system” line, and then press the “Enter” key. Setup will now format the “C” drive as an NTFS drive. This will take a couple of minutes.

    32. On the next screen, press “Enter”.

    33. Again, on the next screen, press “Enter” to check the disk. This does not take very long.

    34. Setup will now copy the files to the hard drive. Once setup finishes, press “Enter” to reboot the computer. When the computer reboots, the setting that was previously changed in the CMOS Setup utility must be restored back to its original setting. To do this, press the “Delete” key while the system is booting up, just as it was done in step 11 of this procedure.

    35. Repeat step 12 except this time change the “1st Boot Device” to “Floppy” and the “3rd Boot Device” to “CDROM”. It is not necessary to make any changes to the power selections. Press the “Esc” key to return to the main menu. Then, repeat step 20 to save changes and exit.

    36. The computer will now reboot a couple of times.

    37. When the “Windows NT Workstation Setup” window comes up, press “Next”.

    38. Make sure “typical” is selected and press “Next”.

    39. The next window is also called “Windows NT Workstation Setup”, but it asks for a “Name” and “Organization”. Type “AVIS” in the “Name” field and type “U.S. Customs Service” in the “Organization” field. Then click the “Next” button.

    40. The next window is the “Registration” window. Locate the Windows NT Workstation manual, and note the “Product ID code located on the bottom right of the cover of that manual. You can use the “Tab” key to advance between the fields. When you have entered the code, click on the “Next” button. Also, remove the Service Pack 4 from the package that contains the manual and set it aside.

    41. The next window asks for a “Computer Name”. If this interface unit is to be for the Inbound lanes, the name will be “INBOUNDn”. If the interface unit is to be used for the Outbound lanes, the name will be “OUTBOUNDn”. Replace the n in each of the names with a 1 if the site has less than 10 lanes, and this one is to be the first. If the site has more than 10 lanes, and this is the second unit, then replace the n with a 2. Type the “Computer Name” in all upper case, and then click on the “Next” button.

    42. The next window asks for a password for the “Administrator Account”. Type the word “perceptics” in the “Password” field. Make sure that you type it in all lower case. Use the “Tab” key and type the word “perceptics” again in the “Confirm Password” field. Then, click on the “Next” button. Note that instead of the word “perceptics”, all that will be displayed in both fields is “**********”.
