Unexplained random errors that cause Winstets to crash

NOTE: This MDAC installation set comes directly from Microsoft’s Web site. You need to install it ONLY if Stonebridge Software, Inc. advises you, or you believe that you may have a corrupted or incomplete MDAC set installed on your PC.
Symptoms of this include errors that refer to ODBC and I/O drivers, as well as unexplained random errors that cause WinSTETS to crash.
Having an outdated, corrupt or incomplete MDAC set on your PC is the #1 reason WinSTETS will not run properly on your PC.
The second reason WinSTETS will not run properly on your PC is an outdated or incorrect version of the Windows Library file MSVCRT.DLL. (see “Windows Library Update” directory for more information)

How to install MDAC on Win95, Win98, Win98SE (All the files you need can be found at http://www.tagout.com/mdac/ )
NOTE: if you are running Win2000, WinME or later versions of Windows, see “special Considerations”, below.
You should have already run the COMCHECK.EXE program to determine what version (if any) of MDAC you have installed. If you have a version of MDAC less than 2.5 OR if you have a mix of MDAC versions on your system, you should completely reinstall MDAC (see “Complete reinstall”, below).
If you have an MDAC version greater than 2.5 (ie: you are running Win 95 or Win 98 and have upgraded MDAC) then there is a possibility that you don’t have the MDAC Visual Foxpro ODBC driver (which WinSTETS needs), because after MDAC ver 2.5 Microsoft stopped packaging that driver from the main MDAC setup file. You need to install it separately. It is included in WinSTETS distribution CD and is called “Visual Foxpro ODBC Driver ver 6.1.8629.1.msi” (see step #4)
If you are running Win2000 or WinXP you should have both MDAC 2.6 AND the Visual Foxpro ODBC drivers ALREADY INSTALLED. You can check for the file VFPODBC.DLL in your windows system directory. You can find it’s version by right clicking on it and selecting “version”.
In order to install the Visual Foxpro ODBC Driver you need the “Microsoft Windows Installer”. You probably have it installed already, but if you double click on the file called “Visual Foxpro ODBC Driver ver 6.1.8629.1.msi” and it doesn’t install, then you just have to install the “Microsoft Windows Installer” for your particular operating system. There is one for Windows 95 and Windows 98, and another one for Windows NT. They are both included in the WinSTETS distribution CD.
Complete Reinstall of MDAC for Win95, Win98, Win98SE
NOTE: if you are running Win2000, WinME or later versions of Windows, see “special Considerations”, below.
open a Command window (ie: a DOS window)
navigate to the \comcheck directory (where comcheck gets installed by default when you run “cc.exe”)
type “comcheck /D” and choose “scan your machine – do not perform an analysis”
Select Scan your machine. Do not perform an analysis. Click OK. Component Checker will scan your latest snapshot or analysis, and return the results.
In the Component Checker window, open the File menu and click Reconfigure MDAC components. If you do not see this option you are running a version of Windows that does not support replacement of MDAC via the Comcheck program. If you have not terminated all MDAC processes, a warning message appears, instructing you to terminate the processes and rerun the scan option. To do so, open the Windows Control Panel and double-click Services. If all processes are closed, a confirmation message appears.
The following warning message appears: "This command will reconfigure all Microsoft Components! Are you sure you want to do this?" Click Yes.
A dialog box appears, stating that you must identify the location of the redistribution program. Click OK. The Location of redist program dialog box appears. Select the directory where the MDAC redistribution program is located, either on your computer or on the network.
Click Open. The removal process begins. Once completed, a message appears stating that MDAC has been removed. (If nothing happens when you click Open, click Cancel, verify that the redistribution program is accessible, and repeat the steps. You might have to copy the redistribution program to your local drive.)
Click OK. The redistribution program will install the selected version of MDAC. When the installation is complete, Component Checker will take control of the process and display a success or error message. If successful, the process is complete; if not, you must resolve the problem and repeat the steps above.
enter the location of the new MDAC install file (in this case it will be “MDAC_TYP ver 2.5.EXE”).
After the install completes you can, if you wish, update again to a later version of MDAC. The MDAC 2.5 install put down the Visual Foxpro ODBC drivers, and subsequent installs will not erase them.
Special Considerations for Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Later Versions of Windows
You can use Component Checker on Windows 2000, Windows Me, and later versions of Windows to identify the version of MDAC and identify problems with the installation. However, the Reconfigure MDAC components menu option does not appear when you run Component Checker on these versions of Windows, even if you use the /d switch. Because MDAC is installed as part of the core functionality in Windows 2000, Windows Me, and later versions of Windows, it is impossible to remove MDAC from the operating system. It is also impossible to reinstall the current version of MDAC without reinstalling the entire operating system.
In addition, you cannot manually replace MDAC components because of the System File Protection (SFP) feature in these versions of Windows. Even though a dynamic-link library (DLL) is replaced, the next time you restart the computer, SFP compares file versions from a known, good cache and replaces any updated file.
You can, however, update these versions of Windows with the latest version of MDAC using the MDAC installer (see next section).
