Known issues for hp support
This driver fixes a ten-units/week field boot problem in Windows. Symptom varied from occasional Windows boot problem to no Windows boot at all. For units that consistently fail, the customer may be able to enter safe mode and remove the current Audio Driver and then install the new one. We are also working on a CD that will automate the process of updating the driver to be sent to the user in last resort.
Details:
XE3 will stop boot process on black screen with blinking cursor (upper left corner) just after the windows splash screen has disappeared. Issue may or may not be intermittent.
Issue verification steps
There may be several reasons why a boot process would stop, not all are related to the ESS issue. To qualify if you are seeing the ESS issue, follow the steps below.
1. Reboot the unit and press F5 immediately after the HP logo disappears (or immediately after the bios summary screen if quiet boot is disabled in bios) to get to the OS boot menu.
2. Choose to boot unit in safe mode
3. Disable audio (instructions differs depending on OS - see below)
Disable audio in WinME and Win98:
Go to Start Menu\Settings\Control Panel\System
Choose the Device Manager tab
Open the Sound, video and game controllers list (click the plus sign in front of this line)
Open the properties for the "ESS Allegro" audio device (highlight line and double-click)
Check the box for the "disable in this HW profile" option
Click Apply
Disable audio in Win2K:
Go to Start Menu\Settings\Control Panel\System
Click the Device Manager button
Open the Sound, video and game controllers list (click the plus sign in front of this line)
Open the properties for the "ESS Allegro" audio device (highlight line and double-click)
Choose "do not use this device in this HW profile (disable)" from the "Device Usage" drop-down menu
Click OK
4.Restart system
If the system is now booting the operating system normally then the unit does suffer from this ESS issue.
Issue solution
1. Follow steps 1 through 4 from issue verification
2. Guide customer to hp web to download new audio driver
3. Assist customer in installing driver. This process depends on what type of driver package we get from ESS.
