To make users more productive, Outlook 2000 performs the following common tasks faster than Outlook 97:
Start up and shut down
Read messages without opening them in a separate window using the built-in Preview Pane
Switch between modules, for example from Inbox to Calendar
Open Meeting Requests faster and accept or decline more quickly
Look up free/busy information for meeting invitees (with Microsoft Exchange Server group scheduling)
Because Outlook is a tremendously powerful product, some users of Outlook 97 were intimidated by the number of commands on the menus and toolbars and had difficulty discovering many useful features. Microsoft employed field studies, usability lab testing and contextual studies to simplify the default menus, toolbars and many dialog boxes in Outlook 2000 to make the most useful commands easier to discover and use. Outlook 2000 is still a powerful product — it includes all the features of previous versions plus many enhancements. Outlook 2000 simply makes it easier for users to discover and wield the power of these features.
In addition to simplified default menus and toolbars, Outlook 2000 includes Office 2000 Personalized Menus and Toolbars that use Microsoft IntelliSense® technology to adapt automatically as a user works with Outlook to provide quick access to the most frequently used commands and to visually suppress commands that are seldom or never used.
