Grid ticks. Short lines indicating where selected grid lines intersect the neat line.
    Halos. Light outlines around letters.
Haptic. Pertaining to touch. Haptic maps use force-feedback devices that allow the user to
    feel map features.
Harmony. One of the goals of graphic design. Harmony refers to all elements of the map
    being agreeably related.
Hill shading. Shading used to create a three-dimensional impression of relief.
Histogram. A graph with bars in which the area of the bars is proportional to the frequency
    in each class or group.
Hue. The dimension of color related to its wavelength. This is the main characteristic of a
color and distinguishes it from other colors.
Hypsometric tint. Color applied to the area between two selected contours. It is a method of

    238 aPPenDiCes
showing relief on maps. Commonly, cool colors are used for low elevations and warm
colors for high elevations. See also Layer tint.
Imagery. Visible representation of objects from cameras, scanners, radar, or other sensors.
Inset map. A separate map located within the neat line of a larger map. It may be a portion of
the map at an enlarged scale, an area that falls outside the borders but included within
for convenience, or a smaller scale map of surrounding areas included for location
    purposes.
Intensity. The richness of a color. Other terms used are “chroma,” “saturation,” and
    “purity.”
Interactive Map. A map that allows the user to click on parts of the map and interact with
    various features.
Internal base data. These data, which are a part of the base map, include such things as admin-
istrative boundaries, coastlines, cities, transportation routes, place names, mountains,
rivers, and lakes, that is, geographic information on or within the mapped area itself.
