Linear scale.
See Graphic scale.
Linear symbol. A line used to represent geographic phenomena that are linear in nature.
Longitude. Angular distance east
or west of the prime meridian; measures from 0° to 180°.
Loxodrome.
See Rhumb line.
Map. A graphic representation of all or a part of the surface of the earth (or other body)
drawn to scale on a plane.
Menu. A list of options on a display screen or digitizing tablet that allows the computer opera-
tor to choose procedures.
Meridian. A line that connects all points having the same longitude.
Meridians are great
circles and converge at the poles.
Mimetic symbol. A symbol that is more or less visually imitative of the object represented,
such as an airplane to represent airports.

Modern typeface. A type style with a vertical and symmetrical stress to the letters with a
sharp distinction between thick and thin strokes. The term “modern” does not indicate
the age of any given typeface.

Natural scale. A synonym for “representative fraction.”
Nautical mile. A unit of distance equal to 1 minute of arc along a great circle or 1,852 meters
or 6,076.1 feet.
Neat line. A line bounding the detail of the map.
Noise. Anything that interferes with the map communication.
Nominal measurement. Distinguishes between things or classifies them on the basis of their
nature without any indication of quantity.
