Checking the blog for mistakes: A grammar auction
Choose ten sentences from the students’ blog posts;
five with mistakes (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.)
and five very good sentences. Write them on the board.
Organise the students into small teams who decide
which sentences are correct and also find and correct the
mistakes in the incorrect ones.
Next, tell each team you are going to ‘sell’ the sentences
to the group who offers you the most points (or money if
appropriate). Give each team 100 points (or €1,000). Hold
a sentence auction where you ask each team to make a
bid for each sentence; however, they should only bid for
the correct

sentences. The winner is the team with the
most correct sentences. If there is a draw between teams,
the team with the most points (or money) left is the
winner.
At the end of the activity, correct the mistakes in the
incorrect sentences as a class. Point out that the
sentences are from the class’s blog posts and encourage
them to always check their work before they post
anything on their blogs.
