HUMANITIES IN MEDICAL EDUCATION
Sindarov O.Kh. (PhD in Agricultural Science)
Shavkidinova D. (PhD in Political Science)
Abstract. There is now a context for teaching humanities in undergraduate
medical education via special study modules. This article discusses the instrumental
and non-instrumental role of the humanities in the education of doctors. The usage the
term “humanities” throughout to mean subjects such as literature, history and
philosophy.
Key words: Humanities, medical education, doctors, patients
It's critical to establish the context
—medical school, which aspires to produce
"excellent doctors." What qualities do you think a good doctor should have? Figure 1
summarizes these points. It is obvious that doctors must have a scientific understanding
of how the body functions in order to understand their patients and to realize how
scientific research can assist them in making judgments regarding the best treatment
for their patients. However, in the therapeutic setting, when dealing with a specific
patient, this scientific approach must be changed. To apply this scientific knowledge
and skills to the specific patient, a "humane" doctor must have the understanding, be
supported by interpretative ability and insight, and be guided by ethical sensitivity.

A competent doctor must also cultivate sensitivity in her interactions with
patients, which is founded on a thorough understanding of herself and her own values,
as well as imaginative insight into the problems and situations of patients' lives.
Doctors must be able to integrate scientific knowledge of disease and therapies with an
understanding of the individual patient, as well as exercise sound clinical judgment in
determining what would be beneficial to this patient with this particular problem at this
time in his life.
There’s more to being a physician than memorizing biology textbooks or
knowing when to order a scan. Recognizing that a background in psychology and
sociology is as critical to delivering effective, equitable health care as understanding
biology.
