THE ROLE OF THE PIRLS INTERNATIONAL ASSESSMENT
PROGRAM IN EVALUATION OF READING LITERACY OF PRIMARY
SCHOOL STUDENTS
Annotation:
This article discusses the role of the PIRLS International Assessment
Program in assessing the reading literacy of primary school students, its
opportunities and specifics.

Today, the world community has begun to address the issue of improving
the quality of education, which can be seen in the successful results of the
education system of the leading Western countries. The main indicator of the
quality of education is the result of the learner. Knowledge is directly related to
reading skills, and one of the most important tasks in the learning process is to
develop the skills and competencies to read and understand books. The PIRLS
(Progress in International Reading Literace Study) system has been used in
developed countries since 2001 to assess students' reading and reading
comprehension skills, including in the primary grades. 50 countries of the world
took part in the tests. Each country has shown different levels of comprehension,
from basic comprehension to basic comprehension. On average, 4th graders from
the Russian Federation and Singapore showed the highest academic performance.
By 2030, Uzbekistan aims to be among the top 30 countries in the world in
the ranking of the international student assessment program PISA. In order to
ensure the implementation of the project at the Tashkent State Pedagogical
University named after Nizami in the 2019-2020 academic year, the module
"International Assessment Programs" is included as an elective subject in the
curricula of senior courses in mathematics, natural and primary education. Also,
the inclusion of the module "International Assessment Programs" in the content of
teaching methods in the curriculum of all bachelor's degrees shows that practical
work is being done to study the new system.

assessment system that assesses the quality of reading and comprehension levels of
