Health professionals that are skilled in caring for patients and demographic
groups that differ in age, gender, socioeconomic level, migrant status, and ethnicity are
required in a health system that serves diverse communities. Cultural competence
among health professionals is seen as one technique for ensuring equal access to
healthcare for people of all races and ethnicities, as well as ensuring that patients
receive care tailored to their specific requirements. Many doctors, on the other hand,
are unprepared to address the needs of increasingly varied populations. That is why
cultural competence should be trained to increase cultural awareness, knowledge, and
skills, leading to behavior change among the medical students.
Cultural competency in health care refers to the ability to provide effective, high-
quality care to patients with a wide range of beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors.
This technique necessitates the development of systems that can tailor health treatment
based on cultural and language disparities. It is also necessary to comprehend the
potential impact that cultural variations can have on healthcare delivery.
Communication might be hampered by differences between healthcare providers
and patients. This, in turn, can influence both physicians' and patients' treatment
decisions. A clinician, for example, may perceive a patient's quiet as a lack of desire in
receiving care. As a result, the clinician may refrain from ordering a diagnostic test
when the patient's response demonstrated their understanding of polite behavior.
Language accessibility is also important. Patients are unable to accurately describe
their symptoms, and doctors are unable to clarify diagnoses due to language problems.
Other than language difficulties, language barriers can generate harmful and improper
settings.
Cultural competency attempts to break down barriers that prevent patients from
obtaining the care they require. It also works to increase communication between
patients and their doctors. Cultural competence provides a road and a framework for
all patients to achieve the aim of greater health. Culturally and linguistically relevant
services cater to each patient's unique preferences and demands. They also aid in the
improvement of health outcomes and the reduction of health inequities.
Cultural competence in health care demands accessibility. Accessibility means
ensuring that language; culture, race, and other such factors don’t become barriers to

patients’ receiving quality care and it also enhances communication, making patients
safer. Clear communication enables healthcare providers to gather correct medical
data. It also promotes active discussions in which patients and clinicians can ask
questions, clarify misconceptions, and establish trust. According to research, the
absence of culturally competent treatment might result in avoidable errors and adverse
occurrences.
Cultural competence offers healthcare practitioners intercultural communication
skills and prepares them to respond to cultural differences more quickly. Furthermore,
cultural competence training can assist organizations in identifying organizational rules
or practices that operate as obstacles to other cultures. They can then modify them to
ensure that they satisfy the demands of a wide range of patients.
