THE GREAT CONTRIBUTION OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Majidova Mehrinigor

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to explore the contribution of The William
Shakespeare. This article investigates the role of Shakespeare in English literature and provides
some essential facts and opinions of popular people about Shakespeare.
Well I can say that without a doubt all people in the world know
about William Shakespeare at least one fact. So that I am intending to give
a brief information about Shakespeare and I will say about his contribution
in English literature. He is often called England's national poet.
Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, actor, dramatist, and many
other theatre occupations. His works within the arts have diversified from
over 38 plays, 154 sonnets, narrative poems, and verses all being translated
into several living languages. Shakespeare was born and raised in
Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne
Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet
and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career
in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called
the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King‘s Men. At age 49
(around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three
years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive; this has
stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical
appearance, his sexuality, his religious beliefs and whether the works
attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of
his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily
comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best works
produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608,
among them Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth,
all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the
149
last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and
collaborated with other playwrights. His writings significantly contributed
to the standardization of English grammar, language, spelling, vocabulary
and literature. Shakespeare included approximately 1700 unique words
into the language many of them are still used in modern time. Besides
Scottish cultural critic, essayist historian Thomas Carlyle said : “If I say that
Shakespeare is the greatest of intellects, I have said all concerning him. But
there is more in Shakespeare’s intellect than we have yet seen. It is what I
call an unconscious intellect; there is more virtue in it that he himself is
aware of.”
Shakespeare was the special effects master of language and a key
contributor to the formation of the English language as we know it today.
One of Shakespeare's most significant contributions is that he introduced a
lot of new words to the English language. He invented 1700 commonly
used words and many new phrases. Without a doubt I can say about his
another great contribution to language is that
Shakespeare is responsible for inventing, popularizing, repurposing,
and preserving thousands of common words in the English language. His
playful usage of language included combining two words to make a new
one, changing verbs into adjectives, changing nouns into verbs, and adding
prefixes or suffixes to words.
He was the special effects master of language and a key contributor
to the formation of the English language as we know it today. One of
Shakespeare's most significant contributions is that he introduced a lot of
new words to the English language. He invented 1700 commonly used
words and many new phrases. Besides we know from old English
literature, there are 8 periods in English Literature. One of the this period
called Renaissance or Age of Shakespeare. Why this period called Age of
Shakespeare? This is because in this period (1500-1660) the great writer,
playwright lived and wrote mostly in genre of drama. Furthermore, in this
period drama, sonets, poetry developed. That is why this period called like
this. In this terms, the English poet, literary critic, translator John Dryden
said about William Shakespeare: “He was the man who of all modern, and
perhaps ancient poets, had the largest and most comprehensive soul.
But Shakespeare’s magic could not copied be; Within that circle none
durst walk but he.
He was naturally learned; he needed not the spectacles of books to
read nature. He looked inwards, and found her there.”
Apart from these, Shakespeare's influence extends from theater and
literatures to present-day movies, Western philosophy, and the English
language itself. William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest
writer in the history of the English language, and the world's pre-eminent
150
dramatist. He transformed European theatre by expanding expectations
about what could be accomplished through innovation in characterization,
plot, language and genre. Shakespeare's writings have also impacted many
notable novelists and poets over the years, including Herman Melville,
Charles Dickens, and Maya Angelou, and continue to influence new
authors even today. Shakespeare is the most quoted writer in the history of
the English-speaking world after the various writers of the Bible; many of
his quotations and neologisms have passed into everyday usage in English
and other languages. According to Guinness Book of World Records
Shakespeare remains the world’s best-selling playwright, with sales of his
plays and poetry believed to have achieved in excess of four billion copies
in the almost 400 years since his death. He is also the third most translated
author in history.
Shakespeare's writings greatly influenced the entire English
language. Prior to and during Shakespeare's time, the grammar and rules
of English were not standardized. But once Shakespeare's plays became
popular in the late seventeenth and eighteenth century, they helped
contribute to the standardization of the English language, with many
Shakespearean words and phrases becoming embedded in the English
language, particularly through projects such as Samuel Johnson's A
Dictionary of the English Language which quoted Shakespeare more than
any other writer. He expanded the scope of English literature by
introducing new words and phrases, experimenting with blank verse, and
also introducing new poetic and grammatical structures.
So to conclude my article, I can say that, William Shakespeare
contributes enormously in all way of life and fields.
